This is the longest road trip my now husband and I have ever taken, almost 1,600 miles, from Colorado Springs, CO to Camp Hill, PA #travelfarbycar. As I was looking up things to do, I found that we would be passing several of the “World’s Largest” displays along the way. We love tent camping, so we picked 3 campgrounds along the route near the cities we wanted to visit. The amount we spent on campsites was less than $100 for all 3 nights!
Day 1 Colorado Springs, CO to Salina, Kansas
World’s Largest Easel, Van Gogh’s Sunflower
Salina KOA
We left Colorado Springs with the GPS set for the Salina, Kansas KOA campground. During our 6 hour drive we stopped to see the World’s Largest Easel in Goodland, KS. Atop the easel there is a painting of Van Gogh’s “Sunflower.”
Day 2 Salina, Kansas to St. Louis, Missouri
Met Andrew’s cousin for lunch at Cupini’s, an Italian Diner’s, Drive-ins, and Dives location in Kansas City
Drove to Granite City KOA in Illinois
Saw the Gateway Arch
Morgan Street Brewery
On the morning of Day 2 we took down the tent and got ready for another 6 hour drive to St. Louis, Missouri. We made a quick pit stop in Kansas City, MO for some lunch with Andrew’s cousin. We ate at Cupini’s, which was featured on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives (we often look for triple D restaurants to try during our trips). After lunch we drove to the Granite City KOA, and cooked dinner in foil packs over the fire. We only had one night in St. Louis, and of course we had to see the Gateway Arch! We parked the car at The Landing Riverfont and walked all over the place, because we were on foot we just happened to find a concert out on the street outside near the Morgan Street Brewery #travelbyfoot. We ran in to have a pint of the Black Bear Dark Lager, and ended up buying a 6 pack to drink at camp!
Day 3 St. Louis, Missouri to Westerville, OH
Stopped in Casey, Illinois and saw the World’s Largest Rocking Chair, Wind Chime, Knitting Needles, Crochet Hook, Mailbox, and Golf Tee (it was a day full of America's largest!)
Stopped for lunch at Kilroy’s Bar-n-Gril in Indianapolis, drank a pitcher cocktail and ate waffle fries
Treehaven Campground in Westerville
Andrew and I knew we had a lot we wanted to do between St. Louis and Ohio so we got an early start. We first stopped in Casey, Illinois, where we expected to see the World’s Largest Rocking Chair and World’s Largest Wind Chime. It turns out that Casey, Illinois had a lot more large things to find, so that was really fun! We went to this cool yarn store and saw the World’s Largest Knitting Needles and Crochet Hook, and while driving around town saw the World’s Largest Golf Tee, and World’s Largest Mailbox! This was a really cool small town to visit! We wanted to make sure we did something in Indianapolis, so we stopped for lunch at Kilroy’s Bar-n-Grill. Thankfully Andrew said he would drive because Kilroy’s makes these awesome pitcher drinks, and they have waffle fries! I would definitely eat here again. After all the stops we finally made it to Treehaven Campground in Westerville, OH.
Day 4 Westerville, OH to Camp Hill, PA
Made it home and got married 2 weeks later!
The next morning we drove home to Camp Hill, PA to get ready for our wedding in just 2 weeks!
If you have the time I highly recommend only driving about 6 hours a day on road trips, because then you will have time to explore a little bit of each city. It is helpful to make a plan for where you would like to stop each night because you can plug those places in to Roadtrippers.com and find a bunch of things to do in that area. Whether you camp or stay with friends, in hotels, or in Airbnbs, just make sure you have your accommodations planned to make the trip smooth sailing (or driving)!
